Intimate pH Balance: An Everyday Guide

Intimate pH Balance: An Everyday Guide

Intimate Care

Sport, the menstrual cycle, antibiotics, stress: many things can upset intimate balance. Simple everyday habits to stay comfortable and confident.

Intimate comfort is something we rarely talk about, yet it affects how we feel every day. The intimate area has its own natural protection, and a few simple habits help keep it in balance.

Why pH matters

The vaginal environment is naturally slightly acidic, with a pH of around 3.8 to 4.5. This acidity is maintained by beneficial bacteria, mainly lactobacilli, and acts as a natural barrier against unwanted microorganisms. Ordinary soaps and shower gels are often neutral or alkaline, which can disrupt this balance and lead to dryness, itching or odour.

What can upset the balance?

  • The menstrual cycle and hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause)
  • Antibiotics and some other medications
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Sport, sweating and swimming pools
  • Synthetic underwear and very tight clothing
  • Over-washing or douching

Everyday habits that help

  1. Use a dedicated intimate gel with a physiological pH instead of regular soap. The Femina Daily Intimate Gel is designed for gentle daily cleansing.
  2. Once or twice a day is enough, a little more during your period. Washing too often removes protective flora.
  3. Only cleanse the external area. The vagina cleans itself; never douche.
  4. Wash from front to back and dry gently with a clean towel.
  5. Choose cotton underwear and change out of damp sportswear or swimwear quickly.

In case of discomfort

For moments of itching, irritation or discomfort, targeted care can help soothe the area. Femina Candigel and Femina Extreme are formulated for these specific situations, as part of your hygiene routine.

Skinormil tip: keep a travel-size intimate gel in your sports bag. It makes it easy to stay comfortable after training.

If symptoms such as unusual discharge, strong odour, burning or pain persist for more than a few days, or keep coming back, consult a doctor or gynaecologist. Intimate hygiene products complement, but do not replace, medical treatment.
